This family comprises 4 species and is restricted to Australia, Argentina and Chile. They were initially regarded as a subfamily of the family Lygaeidae and may be easily confused with them by novices.

Idiostolidae are found in the leaf litter and moss of montane Nothofagus forests. Their feeding habits are unknown, but it is believed that they feed on plant material.

Australia possesses 3 of the 4 described species. Monteithocoris hirsutus and Trisecus pictus are found only in Tasmania. Trisecus armatus is known only from the Barrington Tops region in New South Wales.
